The Couple's Wedding Planning Handbook: The Book I Give Every Engaged Couple
You're engaged. Congratulations. Then, about a fortnight later, the questions arrive. When? Where? How many people? How much will it cost, and who's paying? Suddenly everyone has an opinion, your phone is full of saved posts, and you feel like you're already behind.
You're not behind. You just haven't been told how it works yet.
That's why I wrote The Couple's Wedding Planning Handbook, book eight in the Wedding Handbook series and the only one written for couples rather than professionals. It takes everything we teach wedding planners and puts it in plain language for the two of you.
Why a planning school owner wrote a book for couples
I own The Wedding Academy, which has trained more than 11,000 wedding and event professionals online since 2004. Before that, I grew a wedding planning business to a team of 18 planners. Between those two jobs, I've seen thousands of weddings from the inside, and I've noticed something: the stress couples feel rarely comes from the big decisions. It comes from not knowing the order to make them in.
Professionals have a system. They know the venue comes before the photographer, that the guest list drives the budget, and that the last eight weeks have their own rhythm. Couples are usually making it up as they go. This book gives you the system.
What's inside
The book is 18 chapters, 90 planning pages and 420 full-colour pages, organised the way your planning actually unfolds:
- Before you plan anything: the first weeks of your engagement, your wedding vision, your budget and the guest list
- The big bookings: choosing your venue and ceremony location, finding and booking suppliers, photography and video, and food, drink and cake
- Design and details: styling, flowers, what you'll wear, and stationery, wedding websites and guest communication
- Ceremony and celebration: your ceremony and vows, your reception, speeches, music and seating
- The final countdown: the last eight weeks, the run sheet and the wedding day itself
- You, your relationship and after: staying sane and still in love, and everything that happens after the wedding
At the back is The Planning Toolkit: a master timeline, an example budget and the order to book your suppliers in. If you only use one section, use that one.
The stress couples feel rarely comes from the big decisions. It comes from not knowing the order to make them in.
The three things I tell every engaged couple
If you take nothing else from this post, take these.
1. Decide your priorities before you look at a single venue
Sit down together and each write your top three priorities. Food? Photos? The party? A small guest list? Where they overlap is where your money goes. Where they don't is where you compromise. The handbook has a planning page for exactly this conversation.
2. The guest list is the budget
Almost every cost scales with guest numbers: venue size, catering, chairs, flowers, stationery. Before you fall in love with a venue, have a realistic guest count. It will save you more money than any discount.
3. Book in the right order
Venue and date first, then the suppliers who can only be in one place at a time, like your photographer and celebrant, then everything else. Get the order wrong and you'll find your favourite photographer was booked the week you signed the venue contract.
Who it's for
I wrote it for newly engaged couples, couples planning without a full-service planner, and the parents and wedding parties helping out. It also makes a lovely gift from a parent, a best friend or a bridesmaid, and a handy second copy for the parent who keeps asking about the seating plan.
If you do decide to work with a planner, the book helps there too. You'll understand what they do, what to ask and what's reasonable, so you'll get far more from the relationship. And if you're a professional reading this, it makes a thoughtful welcome gift for your couples. Many planners use The Wedding Planner's Handbook for their own work and give this one to clients.
Planning something small or overseas? Pair it with The Micro, Intimate & Destination Wedding Handbook, which goes deep on elopements, intimate weddings and planning from afar.
Paperback or ebook?
The paperback is $69 USD, printed in full colour through Blurb: order the paperback here. It's the one couples tend to fill with sticky notes and leave on the coffee table. The ebook is $49 and is perfect for planning on the go and sharing between the two of you.
You can see all eight books in the series on my books page. Wherever you are in your planning, I hope this one makes it feel lighter, and a lot more fun.
How to use the book together
The planning pages work best when you fill them in together. Pick a regular planning night, once a week or once a fortnight, and give it a time limit. Work through one chapter, complete its pages, and agree on the next three actions and who owns each one. Then put the book away and do something that has nothing to do with the wedding.
That rhythm does two things. It stops planning from leaking into every conversation, and it makes sure decisions get made in the right order instead of in a panic. Couples who plan this way tend to arrive at the final eight weeks with far fewer loose ends, and a lot more energy for the fun parts. Keep the toolkit timeline somewhere you'll both see it, and tick things off as you go.
And if you hit a wobble halfway through, which almost every couple does, go back to the priorities page you wrote at the start. It's the quickest way to remember what this is all for.

FAQs
What is the best wedding planning book for couples?
Look for one that gives you a clear order of decisions, a realistic budget and practical planning pages. The Couple's Wedding Planning Handbook was written using the same systems professional planners are trained in.
What should we do first after getting engaged?
Enjoy it for a few weeks, then agree your top priorities, a rough budget and a realistic guest count before you visit venues. Those three decisions shape everything else.
Do we need a wedding planner if we have this book?
Not necessarily. Many couples plan their own wedding with the handbook. If you do hire a planner, the book helps you understand their role and get more value from working together.
Is The Couple's Wedding Planning Handbook a good engagement gift?
Yes. It's a popular gift from parents, friends and wedding professionals, and the full-colour paperback is $69 USD through Blurb.
