I find it distressing when so called 'business people' attack in a faceless cheap manner, it speaks more about them as a person & a business person…or lack of. maybe if this energy was better put into their ventures they would actually have respect from people instead of being a sad laughing stock. One should always be VERY careful what stones they throw as their glass house will come crashing down.
Well done Jac Bowie on giving an insight into a hard business, jealousy is a curse, keeping kicking goals here & abroad!

You don’t actually answer the question: “what is the difference between stripping and burlesque?” I think that’s because you can’t because it’s the same thing. Burlesque is perceived just a higher ‘classier’ form of stripping to burlesque dancers. But to the general public, they’re still selling sex (or fantasy) for money, what ever name you give it.

I would love to hear your opinions on the evolution of the modern Burlesque industry in Australia, how do we compare with Europe & America. The behind the scenes of creating stellar shows, such as Ruby Revue, where the concept came from & what gives it an edge over other shows. Ok here's something you may not know then. Most hosting will offer a webmail service, but what I personally recommend, is getting yourself a gmail.com or Google Apps account. Why?

1. If you like to stay signed in, you are signed into mail (accessible from the top link of Google.com), YouTube.

2. You also have access to great features such as google calendar (which is great if you want a personal one, or you can even set up a few – and you can embed one on your site as your show calendar – updatable from your gmail account!

3. You can IMPORT other email addresses, so you can get all your mail in one inbox!!!

4. Gmail is fab for working with iPhones / Blackberry / Android also. You can import ALL your inboxes into your email or add an app. And your contacts in both sync.

5. And it's free!!

No excuse!

Great read, advice and knowledge… but I do have to disagree with only one point, emails accounts.

Hotmail, Gmail and any other major email servers allow us to access them from anywhere any platform, where ever we are around the world and keep it with us forever no matter what web/domain/account provider we are with.

Or have it as a solid back up email.

In that sense it is important to keep one, however not one with a seriously high school beginning like Mama18tassle or vavared82…

I think that Dita is just one example of a performer at the top of the burlesque industry who is a great example of someone having incredible business savvy. You could also consider Immodesty, Catherine D'Lish in the same vain. Whilst Dita obviously started her career with work in fetish, porn and strip club work, it's fair to say she has successfully branched out from there. I don't think it's fair to judge her solely on past pursuits. Every performer has a different background that informs their journey into the burlesque world. Some of my favourite performers are ex-strippers (Kalani Kokonuts, Jo Weldon) and I think that their backgrounds only help them move to their performance style today.

(On a side bar: Inexpensive sweaters? I purchased the W&DB Dita sweater for about $300…okay it's not couture but nor is it KMart)

It's interesting, as I listed Dita Von Teese as an example. This could be replaced with anyone (perhaps in your case Gypsy Rose Lee) and as a personal associate of Dita, I feel well-informed to write her as an example.

This post is not about defending her career choices, or product endorsements. Commanding upwards of $50,000 per performance is testament to this alone.

You have actually just shown another example of the exact opposite to what this post is all about. About speaking negatively about your fellow performers!

She may not be your cup of tea, and you know what, that's totally fine by me. Perhaps you should read the rest of the post, and maybe you can find some advice that is of use, and you can make your own take on it!

Where do you live? Dita is porn/fetish model & actress, strip club stripper and one of many interchangable exes of Marilyn Manson. She's a great example on how to limit your career and become a fame-hungry n'ere do well. She's pretty and has lovely costumes, but she's has no where near the cultural impact or income of Gypsy Rose Lee. She's photographed in Dior (likely borrowed) but sells cheap press-on nails, inexpensive sweaters and cheap lingerie. I'll bet her perfume sells in drugstores & airports. Plus, who has ever seen her live?

Ask yourself WWDD and then do the opposite.

Beyond the obvious costume and choreographic preparation and performance quality already mentioned, one big difference is in the audience. Let me give you a metaphor … burlesque is to art what stripping is to porn … and the difference between art and porn is often in the mindset of the person looking at it.

Strip clubs feel seedy … burlesque feels classy … so what does that say about me? I appreciate the effort made in burlesque … it makes for a more meaningful performance … irrelevant of how much clothing comes off in either style.

I live in Oklahoma in the state capital/metro area, it's a highly conservative state.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that the police here might not even know about our burlesque shows, though I am pretty sure they do. Myself I've been performing (with our local troupe) for two years now, and we aren't invisible. It may have to do with the name "burlesque"… a number of people around here have no idea what burlesque is, it takes seeing a live show for them to get exactly what it is that we do.

I don't like saying this, but I think that perhaps some of the freedoms we enjoy (compared to strippers) are due to the ignorance in our community. This same ignorance also limits the number of venues we can perform in. I'll talk to an owner, and at first they think this is a great idea. Then they soon realize that there may be some skin, they talk to their lawyers and stop returning phone calls. It's frustrating, but what can a gal do?

It really shows a difference in audience / community attitude towards each. Which I think is of course, a big part of this debate.

I am a burlesque dancer, and I was formerly a stripper for about a year. There are some significant differences between the two in my opinion.

Stripping: Prolonged (and inorganic) contact with the audience, more mingling, conversation etc. Shorter stage times, less prep time (costumes etc), this is business not art.

Burlesque: Shortened and organic audience-performer interaction. Longer stage time, more prep time, art first, and then business.

These are significant differences that I can pinpoint off of the top of my head.

As well in my part of the United States, the legal penalties for strippers are many. (Have to cover your nipples, 50% of your butt, 3'' heels min and you can't take them off), but for we burlesque performers here, we take our shoes off, sometimes only wear as much as a merkin and pasties… and nobody bats an eyelash. It's sort of curious.

Well I don't think you have to strip. But sexuality is a big part of burlesque.
Burlesque is (as Bebe Sparkle said the other day) about the "art of the tease." You don't have to end up completely naked, you don't even have to take anything off at all. Many performers do take their clothes off though, and alot of those performers strip for the stripping. But, I think the biggest discriminating factor between "exotic dancers" and burlesque performers is probably the class and tone of a burlesque performance as opposed to a straight up strip at a strip club.
However, the line between "seedy" and a burlesque performace is very hard to draw as culture can have alot to do with your level of tollerance. I do not believe there is really a set line between a "stripper!" and a burlesque performer. It's a very individual thing as is the interpretation of what burlesque itself is.

Personally though, I don't mind being called a stripper (I take my clothes off, it's not exactly a term I can deny) and I would be happy to perform at a GOOD strip club. As I said, it's all about class for me as a performer!

mmm… now thats a tough one! Being only to one burlesque night (and what a night it was!) my thoughts were that burlesque tells a story, whereas stripping – Im am talking about stage shows, private strip shows (ie bucks/birthdays) not lap dancing, pole dancing, table top etc. – is more about the art of taking your clothes off, some strippers (showgirls) do tell stories in their shows but not to the same extent as burlesque.

Whether its a good striptease show or a good burlesque show appreciate all the work your performer has put into their show, most performers put their heart and soul into their shows,, so applaud them loudly, they deserve it!

If you want to work as a stripper – go to a strip club
If you want to work as a burlesque performer – go to a burlesque club

This is a great article.
I don't mean to step on any toes in saying this but what I have experienced in the industry is mostly a lack of understanding in buisness as a performer.
Interest in burlesque is hotting up and with all the burlesque schools and gyms offering 'burlesque classes' there are many people ready and willing to jump in do a class and then have a go marketing themselves as performers. Now by no means do I mean to discourage new talent but the way that the burlesque industry seems to be working at the moment is that it seems to be quite easy to do a class and then call yourself a performer. My view is you don't do a term of ballet class and then start maketing yourself as a ballerina. Why isn't this so in burlesque?
I think the time will come soon when quality will prevail ecspecially over quantity.
In short, great article Jac. I was really impressed to when you first launched the school and I saw that you had a course on managing your brand.

An excellent article Jac. From an event coordinator perspective, we are being given tiny budgets and expected to produce spectacular results, it's no wonder the $50 special is appealling. ____I think another broader issue is that the Australian market does not value our artists highly enough. Overseas, musicians and performers ask, and recieve, far better fees, where as in Australia, a performer would be laughed at for requesting such an amount. It's at a point that talented performers can hardly make a living off their skill, and therefore they are deterred from even trying. It's also no wonder talent shows are so popular these days, for both performers and production companies – though they have a tendency to backfire for the performers anyway (Damian Leith is an excellent example).____And let's not even talk about how hard it is to get decent funding to run events in Australia…____Sadly, I am not really sure about how it can be resolved, it's been in issue for years now and it seems a vicious circle. The corporate end of the industry can and do pay the big bucks, but there are only so many of us who can access or offer that opportunity.

Hey Venus. You know these $50 specials I talk about – this is why it's getting hard to sell shows at $300 min. Stick to your guns. Performing on a regular show with regular rates is one thing, but selling yourself to a client – don't EVER sell yourself short. Back it up with your reputation, experience and approaching the booking as a professional. It will pay off in the end I promise you.

Fair enough but the problems lies for performers as well. It's actually a constant battle trying to get paid what you ask for (more often than not the fee gets dropped). While I'd LOVE to charge $300 a show, at the same time if promoters can't pay it then it's.. no show for the performer. And this is happening a lot now. At the end of the day if I want to perform and take it seriously, I pretty much have to take what I can get.

Hi there,
i contacted you last year but didn't get a reply.
i wanted to know if there were any cabaret classes in Melbourne.
Burlesque is gorgeous but it's not my thing; I feel I'd be far more suited to cabaret.
I have Googled but only come up with some more general acting classes. I know it's one of those things you probably develo more than learn, but basics and history, help and pointers would go a long way.

A lot of great advice, though I'm not sure I'd agree with the standard routines – that would likely depend on your character, and since just about everybody has a fan dance/balloon pop/strip it's actually pretty nifty to *not* be expected to do any of those. Go really unconventional – the best way to do that is to do something that's true to you as a person. re having to unlearn stuff from stripclub stripping….ahahahaha. Reminds me of Kalani Kokonuts' interview with 21:CP where she advocates the total opposite – if you wanna be a burlesque performer get a job at a stripclub!

I don't agree with Kalani on that aspect, mainly for the same reasons you mention here (and also because stripping jobs can be quite hard on the psyche). How about you?

I think this was an interesting review indeed and the writers ability to "gauge the audience's reaction" is a feather in her cap as it demonstrates the standard of performer she obviously is. Only a committed performer in touch with her audience would know such detail. I have seen the Southern belles perform many times and they certainly knows how to entertain their audience.

Somthing I have learnt from teaching Burlesque for many years, is that just because you have done one show (where your choreo was made up for you), does NOT make you a professional.
And you forgot to mention the ego issue which I have to deal with time and time again – I reiterate – ONE performance does not make you Gypsy Rose Lee.
