Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has today shocked his colleagues and enemies, by ditching the long-standing lifetime Business Class Gold Pass for former MPs.
The Gold Pass enabled former MPs to travel on Business Class at tax-payers expense.
The new policy will see all current MPs now stripped of this benefit, with the exception of Prime Ministers. Interestingly enough, Mr Turnbull has stated that he will not use this privilege himself when retiring.
“A lot of Australian families are doing it tough and we have had to make cuts to supplements and to adjust the assets test to help the budget,” he told the Coalition party room.
The Government will be introducing the bill immediately, despite protest from a few coalition party members due to retire in the near future.
